MADAME MONSIEUR – European Cities
ot the Culture 2000
Press
BASLER ZEITUNG 14.07.2000 (Maya Künzler: A Basler on the European cultural stage)
(...) Philippe Olza, a freelance choreographer, dancer and acrobat has pulled off a coup with his interdisciplinary project "Madame Monsieur" which will tour four of the nine European Cities of Culture 2000.
LE TEMPS - Le samedi culturel 29.07.2000 (Cracovie
- Bernard Osser: The Swiss dancer Philippe Olza conquers Europe)
(...) Olza not only contributes to European culture, he also facilitates other Europeans in their process of self-discovery as those sites which he has chosen for his choreography are discovered anew. This examination of identity is of particular importance in Poland, where the yoke of Communism was superimposed on a long European tradition for almost half a century. Judging by the enthusiastic reaction of the Cracow public Olza's cultural conquest was more than successful.
LA TRIBUNE DE GENÈVE 19.07.2000 (Serge Bimpage:
Philippe Olza leads the spectators along the ramparts of Cracow)
(...) the architectural setting influencing the artists' movement and dance. This reversal in perspective is interesting. Not only because of the unusual resonance of the dance and the choreography, but also because of the benefit reaped by the audience.
LE TEMPS - Le samedi culturel 29.07.2000
(Cracow - Bernard Osser: Hide and seek)
(...) Last Wednesday in Cracow saw the conquest of the Villa Decius and its public. Madame and Monsieur play a game of subterfuge. The performance space changes continually. The public thus participates in the performance and continually shapes the performance space.
TANZ DER DINGE 13th. Year . Nr.51, Oct. / Nov. 2000 (Cracow - Maya Künzler: Interdisciplinary project in Europa)
(…) The performance in Cracow offered wonderfully surreal moments suffused with dramatic tension. The fact that Switzerland now has a cultural presence in four European cities stems primarily from the actual concept of "Madame Monsieur". By placing architecture at the core of the performance a direct link is established with a historic site, one of the foci of the Cities of Culture.
THE PRAGUE POST
September 20-26.2000 (Prague - Matej Novák: Ladies and gentlemen)
(…) "Madame Monsieur" features talent from six different countries, which is quite interesting considering there are only seven people involved in its staging. They each bring their own cultural perspective to a show that knows no language barrier.
VECERNIK
PRAHA 27.09.2000 (Prague - bra: Dance and Music in a Gothic setting)
(…) Last week Prague played host to an unusual cultural event, which hitherto has not formed part of our cultural landscape, an artistic expression in a combination of music, dance and mime enriched with architectural elements. This allows the spectator to dream equally of the historic past as well as of present times creating an unforgettable experience. After a very short time an extraordinary bond forms between the audience and the artists.
LA PROVENCE 12.10.2000 (Avignon - Nedjma
Van Egmond: "Madame Monsieur": a fascinating journey through the Musée Calvet)
(...) On the one hand the expressiveness of the dancers and the absolute beauty of the music... on the other hand... unique to "Madame Monsieur"... the rediscovery of the Musée Calvet with warm and mysterious lighting technique evoking the magic of this historic site.
LE DAUPHINE LIBERE 11.10.2000 (Avignon - Michel
Leiris: "Madame Monsieur" in the Musée Calvet)
(...) A surprising and unexpected performance spectacle. "Madame Monsieur", a powerful and enriching experience. Not to be missed.
L’AIR D‘AVIGNON Dezember
2000 (Avignon: Marie Dulcamara: A French-Swiss presentation combining dance, music and architecture in the Musée Calvet)
(...) The spectators are in themselves a surprising sight as they await the opportunity to participate with the artists in a thoroughly succesful performance.
LA PROVENCE 10.10.2000 (Avignon - When architecture inspires dance)
(…) An original idea: breathing life into a building through means other than their usual usage. The result is a new perspective on the building transcending their present function.
BERGENS TIDENDE 02.11.2000
(Bergen - Marit Strømmen: Museum by night)
(…) Olza's choreographed art critique is sophisticaded and manneristic in style, an overstatement of "Art", in which the spectators are pushed from room to room in order not to forget conventions and codes of the performance. As such, "Madame Monsieur" is a study in the stiffness of official art. This display advocates how confortable it can be to do away with the established art traditions, where Monteverdi is therapy, dance is erotic and architecture is theatre. Simultaneously, the performance both exploits these aesthetics and makes a statement about art as purely artificial, depending on the point of view. In the context established by "Madame Monsieur", a constellation whose critique is not based on a priviledged position, the definition of art is no problem. Art is rock'n roll.

KLASSEKAMPEN 04.11.2000 (Bergen - Andreas Langenes:
Dance in architecture)
(...) The choreography bears the hallmark of a firm hand. The dance underlines the masculine and feminine qualities of the Vestlandske Kunstindustrimuseum to the point where they constitute a theme in their own right. Hence the dance around the heartshaped structure and the violin of Ole Bull in the Red Room contributes to the softening of the neo-classical architecture which is so very masculine. Dance and music function as building blocks, a quality material which augments the value of the architecture.
